Curriculum
The journey, term by term
Every module ends in finished work. Expand any module to see what you learn and what you build.
Term 1
Design & Motion Foundation
Months 1–6
You learnPhotoshop and Illustrator from zero — layers, masking, color, typography, layout. AI generation inside the tools: Generative Fill, Firefly, prompt-craft for concept images. Design principles that survive every software change.
You createA personal brand identity pack and 5 finished poster/social designs — half hand-built, half AI-assisted, all professionally finished.
You learnShot language, framing, continuity, story beats. AI-assisted storyboards: generating frame explorations, refining by hand. Why every animator and VFX artist must think in shots.
You createA complete storyboard for a 60-second film — the same film you will actually produce in Term 3.
You learnProfessional editing on DaVinci Resolve/Premiere: cuts, pacing, sound. The 2026 AI toolkit: voice isolation, AI voiceover and dubbing, auto-captions, silence removal, one-long-video-to-many-reels workflows.
You createThree finished films: a 1-minute edit, a podcast-style fast edit, and a reels package — published to your channel.
You learnAfter Effects: keyframes, easing, titles, logo animation, lower thirds, broadcast-style graphics. AI-assisted asset generation feeding your compositions.
You createA motion graphics reel segment: animated logo, title sequence, and an explainer graphic package.
You learnThe 12 principles of animation — timing, spacing, squash & stretch, anticipation — the grammar every 3D animator is tested on. Digital 2D exercises.
You createClassic animation exercises (bouncing ball to character walk) that become the foundation of your Term 2 work.
Term exitA design + editing + motion portfolio strong enough to freelance with — while your 3D journey begins.
Term 2
The 3D Core
Months 7–12
You learnMaya modeling from primitives to characters: topology, edge flow, hard-surface and organic. The 2026 layer: generating base meshes with AI (Meshy/Tripo/Rodin-class tools) and professionally retopologizing them — the skill studios now hire for.
You createA modeled environment and character, plus an AI-generated asset professionally rebuilt by you with a before/after topology breakdown.
You learnUV unwrapping, Substance-style PBR texturing. AI-generated texture sets and materials; projecting AI imagery onto your models; look development driven by AI concept boards.
You createYour Term 2 assets fully textured — one hand-painted, one AI-material workflow — presented as lookdev sheets.
You learnArnold rendering: three-point lighting, HDRI, materials response, render passes. AI denoising and upscaling for fast, clean finals.
You createPortfolio-grade beauty renders of your own assets — the images that open interview conversations.
You learnJoints, skinning, controls, facial basics. Auto-rigging tools and when to trust them. Maya automation with AI-written scripts — batch tasks in plain English, no coding background needed.
You createA fully rigged character (yours from M6) ready for animation, plus your personal toolbox of AI-written Maya scripts.
You learnBody mechanics, walk cycles, acting shots — the 12 principles applied in 3D. The 2026 superpower: motion capture from a phone video (Rokoko Vision/DeepMotion-class), retargeted onto your rig and polished by hand; physics-assisted animation with Cascadeur.
You createAn animation reel segment: a polished walk cycle, an acting shot, and a phone-video mocap performance on your own character.
Term exitA 3D generalist showreel — modeling, texturing, lighting, animation — with AI-accelerated workflow throughout.
Term 3
VFX, Integration & Specialization
Months 13–18
You learnGreen screen keying, AI roto (Roto Brush/Magic Mask), tracking, cleanup and object removal, color grading. Node-based compositing concepts (Nuke-class awareness) on top of After Effects fluency.
You createThree VFX shots: a clean key, an AI-roto extraction with background replacement, and an object-removal cleanup.
You learnPlacing CG into live footage: matchmoving, lighting match, shadows. Flow Studio-class AI workflows (CG character into real footage automatically, refined in Maya). Generative video (Veo/Runway/Kling-class) as previz and B-roll.
You createA live-action shot with your Term 2 character composited into the real world — the centerpiece of your reel.
You learnParticles, fluids, destruction and cloth basics in Maya/Bifrost. When to simulate, when to use stock, when AI generation is enough — the production judgment.
You createTwo FX shots for your reel: an environmental effect and a destruction/cloth study.
You learnDeep-dive with mentorship in your chosen lane: Character Animation · VFX Compositing · Motion Design · Game Asset Art. Studio-style briefs, weekly dailies, feedback rounds — run like a junior artist’s first job.
You createA specialization mini-reel of 3–4 polished pieces in your chosen lane.
You learnCutting your reel like a professional: selection, order, breakdown shots, music. ArtStation/portfolio setup, resume for creative roles, interview and test-brief preparation, freelancing and studio application strategy.
You createYour professional demo reel + complete application kit — screened at Graduate Demo Day before an invited audience.
Term exitStudio-ready portfolio, one specialization, and the AI-native workflow studios now expect.
